The Beading Archives

Delicate beading accents our iconic emblem.

Beading is a long-standing tradition for many tribes across East Africa. The colours, patterns, and the number of jewellery items worn signify many events including the tribe, social status and marital status of the person wearing them.

Traditionally, beads were made from organic materials like shells, bones and seeds but were replaced with colourful glass beads in the 19th century.

Surprising Reveal

The colourful glass beads in East Africa that are inherent to markets and tribal jewellery are actually sourced from the Czech Republic. It goes to show that traditions are ever-evolving and that the world is incredibly inter-connected.

Heritage is not static but instead evolutionary.
